Every week in CutClay Studio, makers upload hundreds of custom earring silhouettes, botanical sketches from Procreate, and vector monograms from Illustrator or Inkscape. While most files compile into a watertight 3D clay cutter in under a second, roughly one in five uploads triggers an open contour warning or generates unexpected internal walls.
The reason is simple: a 2D drawing on a screen only cares about how pixels look to the human eye, whereas a 3D-printed clay cutter blade is a physical, continuous 0.4mm mechanical wall that must slice cleanly through raw polymer clay and release without trapping air or tearing edges.
This guide walks through the exact geometry rules CutClay’s CAD engine looks for, with visual side-by-side comparisons and step-by-step export recipes for Procreate (iPad), Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, and Canva.
The 4 Golden Rules of 2D-to-3D Cutter Geometry
Before exporting your artwork from your drawing app, check it against these four physical constraints:
- Rule 3 — Keep a 1.2mm Minimum Gap Between Internal Details: At typical earring sizes (25mm–40mm), any internal cutout or stamp recess narrower than 1.2mm will trap raw polymer clay like a garlic press. Give your floral petals and geometric windows breathing room so clay releases cleanly.
- Rule 4 — Solid Black on Pure White for Bitmap Sketches (PNG/JPG): When you drop a PNG or JPG into CutClay Studio, our real-time auto-tracer converts high-contrast edges into smooth vector curves. Pencil shading, paper grain, or drop shadows confuse the tracer; a solid black fill on a clean white or transparent canvas traces with razor precision.
How CutClay Distinguishes Outer Cutters vs. Inner Imprint Stamps
One of CutClay Studio’s most powerful time-savers is automatic Two-Part Cutter + Imprint Stamp generation from a single SVG file:
- The Outermost Closed Path always becomes your 0.4mm Cutting Blade (plus the 1.2mm tapered bevel wall and 3.5mm ergonomic base handle). Importantly, CutClay locks the inner cutting edge to 100% of your exact contour and pushes all wall thickness strictly outward — so your clay piece is never shrunk or rounded inside.
- Interior Closed Paths & Linework inside that outer boundary can be used in two ways depending on the mode toggle at the top of the Studio:
- In Cutter Mode, interior closed shapes act as through-cut windows (for example, the hole in a donut arch or monstera leaf cutouts).
- In Imprint / Stamp Mode, CutClay converts interior paths into raised embossing details and automatically applies a 0.6mm perimeter clearance offset so the stamp plate glides smoothly inside your outer cutter without squishing the edges of your clay slab.
Step-by-Step Prep by Design App
1. Procreate on iPad (PNG Export Workflow)
You do not need desktop vector software if you draw on an iPad. CutClay Studio’s built-in bitmap tracer turns clean Procreate drawings directly into 3D cutters:
- Create a square canvas at 2000 × 2000 px (300 DPI).
- Use a smooth, non-textured inking brush (such as Studio Pen or Syrup in the Inking library) with StreamLine / Stabilization set to 60%–80% so your edges are smooth rather than jittery.
- Fill your outer earring silhouette with 100% solid black (
#000000) using ColorDrop. If your design has interior cutout holes, paint them pure white (#FFFFFF). - Turn off any paper texture layers, export as PNG, and drop it straight into CutClay Studio.
2. Adobe Illustrator (SVG Export Workflow)
- Select your artwork and press Cmd+Y / Ctrl+Y (Outline View). Whatever black wireframe lines you see in Outline View is exactly what any 3D CAD slicer sees.
- If you drew your shape using thick brush strokes, convert strokes to closed shapes via Object → Path → Outline Stroke, then click Pathfinder → Unite.
- Delete any invisible bounding boxes or stray anchor points (Object → Path → Clean Up).
- Use File → Export → Export As → SVG (Styling: Presentation Attributes, Decimal Places: 3).
3. Inkscape (Free & Open Source)
- Select all objects (
Ctrl+A) and convert primitives or text into paths via Path → Object to Path (Shift+Ctrl+C). - Merge overlapping outer pieces with Path → Union (
Ctrl++). - If your path has hundreds of jagged nodes from an auto-trace, press Ctrl+L (Path → Simplify) once to smooth the curve so your 3D printer doesn’t stutter on micro-segments.
- Save as Plain SVG (*.svg).
4. Canva & Cricut Design Space Vectors
When downloading SVGs from Canva, place a single solid-black shape on a blank page, check Transparent background, and download as SVG. Avoid multi-colored shaded illustrations with dozens of decorative layers — silhouettes and bold botanical line art produce the cleanest polymer clay cuts.
